TESTING YOUR SYSTEM

Q. How often should I test my system?

A. Most all alarm systems should be tested at least once a month.  Also testing should be done after any work is done to the phone lines, electrical system, and after lightning strikes.

Q. Do I have to test the whole system or just parts of it?

A.  Yes you should always test your entire system, most homes and small businesses systems can be tested in a matter of minutes and it is time well spent.  Some of the larger systems can be tested every week with 1/4 of the system tested each week so the entire system is tested each month.

Q.  Does the same person have to test the system each time.

A.  No.  It often helps if more than one person does the testing.  It can also be a good time to teach someone new how the system works, and hands on experience with all the functions and sounds.

Q.  How often should I have DAC Security Systems test my system.

A.  Most all home and small businesses should have us test their system at least every years.  In the case of fire alarms in commercial residential buildings every 6 months.

Let's get started then

  1. First thing to do if your system is monitored (authorities call when alarm trips) is call 1-800-858-7811 and let them know you are going to test your system.  You will first need to tell them you pass code (word or number) and your monitoring account number.  Your name and address will work also, but it is slower for them.  They will ask you how long you want it in test, this can be  in hours / minutes or give them a time of day you want the test to end.  Give yourself plenty of time, you can always call and take it off test before the end.

  2. Now that the monitoring is in test arm your system as if you are going to leave the building.  Wait until your exit delay is over, most are 1 minute, then start walking the building.  Open every door that is protected, walk in front of all motion detectors, and open all windows that are protected.  Let the alarm go for at least 2 minutes, then disarm the system by entering your code.

  3. Your keypad will now show all the areas that were tripped (You can also test a few areas at a time)

  4. If your system has smoke detectors trip them now.  Most have a test button to push or a place to hold a magnet near.  The red light should be on solid now.

  5. After you have tested them turn off the alarm and reset the smoke detectors (reset button on keypad, or if your system does not have a reset button, enter you code number a second time to reset).

  6. Now that you have tripped all the devices on you system (all at once or a few at a time) double check to see your system is reset and disarmed.

  7. Wait about 5-10 minutes and then call the monitoring station and ask them if they received signals from your alarm.  They will tell you what alarms came in.  Make sure every alarm went in.

  8. At this time you can tell them to take your account off of test or just let the test expire at the time you gave earlier.
